This Whirling Dervishes Ceremony is a unique Cappadocia experience. It differs from other “Turkish Nights” in the region because the ceremony is solely committed to a display of whirling dervishes (no other form of dance or performance).

The ceremony is performed in an ancient caravanserai or roadside inn where travelers once stopped for rest along the Silk Road. You will be mesmerized by the meditative movements of the dervishes in this significant and meaningful ceremony.
Their movements are incredibly beautiful and watching them will transport you back to the time of Mevlana Rumi who began these ceremonies as a form of meditation. He chose dance and music as a channel for reaching God and the whirling dervish ceremonies today are a direct celebration of that. Even the clothing that the dancers wear in these ceremonies are significant. They wear layers of robes that they remove mindfully as they whirl, symbolizing that removal of their worldly lives, or egos. The tall hats they wear symbolize the tombs of their egos. Eventually, the dancers are left with only their white robes, symbolizing a higher state of consciousness and the final part of the whirling dervish ceremony. Traditionally, the dancers (including Mevlana Rumi) would fast before these ceremonies. They turn in a specific way, using their feet to propel them in a circular motion. Their eyes remain open but unfocused. It is a mesmerizing sight to behold.
